General Discussion / i sing off key, what should i do?
« Last post by cogs on June 16, 2014, 07:44:27 pm »
listen to yourself a little more critically. play a piano key, and try to match the sound exactly (play in your range, so you won't overstress your voice).

ask yourself, 'am i higher or lower than the piano note?' most of the time, you'll be lower. try stretching your sound up a little, and hear if that is closer to the piano note.

practice matching notes close to where you started from, either up or down (half steps are good). try to remember where your voice felt or sounded correct.

after a few practice sessions, play a short song, and see if you can match the notes when singing. go slowly, and increase speed when you are more comfortable that you're getting better.

tips:
  • support your sound with air
  • develop definite positions for your throat
  • lower sounds take more air, and tend to be flat
  • higher sounds tend to be sharp
  • don't be afraid of a little vibrato
  • don't get discouraged by small improvements. they are improvements!

General Discussion / why do i need scales?
« Last post by cogs on June 16, 2014, 06:38:03 pm »
haha! you don't! you can play the notes in a scale out of order, to make any phrase of music you want. notes are notes, no matter what order you place them.

'so why do they have scales in the first place?'

because the notes are in alphabetical order, and spread out according to a sound pattern. start on any note, and you can use the same sound pattern, which is:
WWHWWWHW (whole whole half, whole whole whole half, whole)
like, C D E F G A B C, with the whole steps between CDE, and FGAB, and the half steps between EF,BC (stick another whole onto the end for the last C).

scales just help to have a starting point to determine other scales, like minor scales, and triads.
but if you want to play your own thing, learn about keys with their sharps and flats.
